Heart for All People
John 1:46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.”
I want you to think of groups or communities you may belong to. Each one has certain requirements you have to meet before you can belong.
In some groups you have to behave a certain way and in others you have to believe a certain way. What requirement do you think is necessary to belong? When you look at the gospel of John whether it is the fishermen in chapter 1, the wedding party guests in chapter 2, the social insider chapter 3, or the social outsider in chapter 4. Each person is of such infinite worth to Jesus, not because they bring anything special with them, but because they are loved by God. The only requirement you need to belong is actually nothing. It is whenever we bring things to qualify ourselves for his love that we prove we do not understand grace.
This is the message makes Jesus’ heartbeat, become Philip and the other disciples heartbeat. They call out and say, “Come and See.”
Today reflect on God’s grace before you ever behaved, or believed, Jesus said you belong. That is the message to people: “For God so loved the world…” even when the world was at odds with Him. He still loved us.
